Attractions and Events

The Butter Cow

The iconic butter cow was first sculpted in 1911 and takes around 600 lbs. of butter to create. This year’s companion sculpture, “Meet Me at the Pepsi Clock,” celebrates Fair Spirit and America’s 250th birthday.

Barnyard Yoga

A fair favorite returns for 2026 with Dairy Cow Yoga, Goat Yoga, and Bunny Yoga sessions spread across the 11 days. Each class is $25 per person and includes a Barnyard Yoga mat.

Paul R. Knapp Animal Learning Center

One of my favorite buildings on the fairgrounds is the animal learning center. There are always baby animals and round-the-clock educational presentations. Pro tip: these are some of the nicer bathrooms on the fairgrounds and where families can comfortably breastfeed or pump.

The Avenue of Breeds

This is a fun row to check out, with typically over 100 different breeds of animals found in Iowa.

Cowgirl Queen Contest

Back in the day, my wife competed in this contest and introduced me to it when we were dating. It’s a thrilling contest highlighting the horsemanship skills of talented cowgirls around the state of Iowa.

Governor’s Charity Steer Show

This is the 44th year for this annual fundraiser benefiting the three Ronald McDonald Houses of Iowa (Des Moines, Iowa City, and Sioux City). Last year’s show set a record, raising $569,000, bringing the event’s total since 1983 to more than $6 million. This year’s show is Saturday, August 15.

Giant Slide

Did you even go to the state fair if you didn’t go down the giant slide? Send me pictures or it didn’t happen!

The Susan Knapp Amphitheater

The lineup this year includes Josh Baldwin, Montgomery Gentry featuring Eddie Montgomery, Moon Taxi, La Sonora Dinamita, Hairball, Asleep at the Wheel, and the Sugar Hill Gang, who all hit the free stage on different nights.

New Foods

The fair says over 80 new foods are debuting across nearly 200 food stands this year, from four brand-new vendors. A few that caught my eye from the announced lineup:

•      Porky Parm Gnocchi: gnocchi with sausage and cream sauce

•      Ultimate Minneapple Pie: deep fried apple pie

•      All-American Scrambled Egg Roll: breakfast egg roll with cheese sauce

•      1776 Liberty Bowl: sourdough bread bowl filled with cheese curds, fries, onion rings, shredded beef, and gravy

•      Patriotic Nachos: waffle chips with vanilla ice cream, cherry and blue raspberry dips

Food on a Stick

The Iowa State Fair is renowned for its creative and delicious food on a stick, with more than 50 stick options across the grounds most years. The new stick foods for the 2026 fair look interesting:

•      Star Spangled Swine: pork glazed in red soda with blue and white honey crystals

•      PB&J: think the classic sandwich on a stick

•      BLT: who doesn’t love a good bacon, lettuce, and tomato?

•      Loaded Sausage Waffle: breakfast on the go
